Switching to Fish, Part 1: Type Less Immediately

Fish gives you autosuggestions, syntax highlighting, and sane defaults out of the box. Install it, set it as your shell, and feel the difference in ten minutes.

Bash is the shell you inherit. Zsh is the shell you spend a weekend configuring before it does what fish does by default. Install fish, set it as your login shell, and the first win arrives before you configure anything.

Type the start of a command you have run before and fish shows the rest inline, in gray, before you press anything. Right arrow accepts it. No Tab menu, no fuzzy-matching plugin to install.

sudo apt install fish
chsh -s /usr/bin/fish

It sounds small. It saves an amount of typing you only notice once you are back on bash for a week, reaching for a right-arrow habit that does nothing there.

Syntax highlighting is on from the first prompt too. Valid commands one color, mistakes another, before you hit enter. That is the whole pitch for part 1: less typing, fewer broken commands, zero config files touched.

Next: part 2 replaces your alias soup with real functions.
