PartyKit Is Dead, Long Live PartyServer

Hosted PartyKit shut down on October 23, 2026. The good news: it was Durable Objects all along, and PartyServer hands them straight to you.

On October 23, 2026, the hosted PartyKit cloud shut down. If your WebSockets lived on *.partykit.dev, that sounds like bad news. It isn't.

Here's the secret: PartyKit was always Durable Objects in a party hat. A Durable Object is a tiny server with its own memory and storage, and you get one per name, so it's perfect for a chat room or a game.

Since joining Cloudflare in April 2024, PartyKit has shed the middleman. PartyServer is a thin layer over Durable Objects: one object per room, in your own account.

What every room gets:

  1. WebSockets: onConnect, onMessage, broadcast. Same moves.
  2. A database: SQLite via ctx.storage.sql.
  3. Naps: turn on hibernation and idle rooms stop billing for duration.
  4. One bill: wrangler deploy, with a wrangler.jsonc that names your Durable Object bindings.
  5. Same frontend: partysocket keeps working. Point it at the new host.

It's also what the Cloudflare Agents SDK runs on. PartyKit isn't gone. It's just everywhere.
